What is Extraversion?

Conversely to introverts, extraverts get their energy from social interaction. They prefer stimulation and are more gregarious and assertive than introverts. They tend to prefer being the centre of attention, large gatherings and interaction with others.

Carl Jung

The extraversion-introversion spectrum was introduced by Psychoanalyst Carl Jung. He suggested that everyone has these two sides to them, but that one dominated the other.

There are a number of tests that can tell where you are on the scale, such as Myers-Briggs.

Dopamine

Extraverts tend to be stimulated by the reward pathway, whereby the neurotransmitter Dopamine reinforces activities that are active and outgoing. Contrary to introverts, extraverts do not like time alone. They crave being with others and will quickly become agitated in periods alone.

Extraversion has obvious social benefits and they tend to bond with others easily and are social butterflies.
